MADISON, Wis. – The Georgia Credit Union Foundation received a portion of the National Credit Union Foundation’s most recent $123,000 to support a project coordinator for an alternative loan program aimed at helping people with disabilities. The New York State Credit Union Foundation, the $5 million Neighborhood Trust FCU, the Thurston Union of Low Income People Credit Union – a start-up based in Tacoma, Washington – and the $1.6 million Brooks Community FCU, headquartered in Brooks, Minnesota, also received funding. Neighborhood Trust received a grant to further its work with the non-profit Hispanic Federation toward increasing financial education and home ownership among Hispanics in its field of membership. The New York State Credit Union Foundation received a grant to strengthen its programs around the state designed to introduce New York State residents who don’t have bank accounts to credit union services. TULIP’s grant will be used toward the purchase of a new data processing system, and Brooks Community FCU will use its grant to upgrade its computer system, the Foundation said. The latest round of grants moved the total grants for the last 10 years to more than $8 million, the Foundation said. It declined to reveal individual amounts of the grants, citing a policy of protecting the privacy of its grantees.
