BIRMINGHAM, Ala.-As part of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s “Homeownership Express,” a national bus tour to promote homeownership during June, NCUA Chairman Dennis Dollar outlined credit unions’ efforts to increase homeownership. During a stop in Birmingham on June 20, the chairman took the opportunity to explain credit unions’ role in providing people from all socio-economic backgrounds access to affordable financial services, a first step to becoming homebuyers. Others speaking at the bus stop included Congressman Artur Davis (D-Ala.), Mortgage Bankers of Association of America Board Member John Johnson, and Steven Nesmith, HUD assistant Secretary for the office of Congressional and Intergovernmental Relations. Recent census figures have shown that nearly 70% of all Americans own their own homes, while less than half of African-American and Hispanic families are homeowners. -
