WASHINGTON-U.S. Treasury Rosario Marin and Treasury Assistant Secretary for Financial Institutions Wayne Abernathy are scheduled to present an honorary certificate of recognition for its efforts teaching financial education to Columbus’ Hispanic community. Ohio Credit Union League’s Latino Financial Literacy Program will receive the award June 23 in Columbus. Marin and Abernathy will help teach a Spanish-language financial education class covering savings, money management, and handling credit following the presentation. The Latino Financial Literacy Program, now in its second year, is a four-session course providing instruction on financial goals, budgeting and credit. Last year, 225 people attended the course and received a certificate of graduation. The Ohio league, in partnership with the Ohio State University Extension Office, sponsors the program. Latinos are the fastest growing ethnic population in the United States. While they have an aggregate purchasing power of more than $450 billion, 43% of Hispanics in America say they know little about retirement planning and as many as 25% do not have a bank account.
