BOSTON – E*Trade, the nation’s second largest independent deployer of ATMs, has settled a complaint with National Federation of the Blind and the Massachusetts Attorney General by agreeing to retrofit the 2000 ATMs the firm owns around the country so that they provide talking interfaces suitable for the blind to use. Regulations derived from the Americans with Disabilities Act mandate that all ATMs be able to provide similar talking services for the visually impaired. According to a media source, the commitment does not completely settle the argument. The Federation wants the firm to also retrofit the 13,000 machines that it manages for their retail owners. E*Trade contends that it can do the work on the machines, but that the retail owners should shoulder the cost of the retrofitting, the source reported.
