WESTBROOK, Maine – The Maine Credit Unions’ Campaign for Ending Hunger has recently reached a milestone of awarding its one-millionth dollar. The Good Shepherd Food Bank in Auburn is the recipient of the $3,000 grant. Each year, approximately 100 hunger organizations across Maine participate in Ending Hunger Week and raise money during a ten-day period in November. Since 1990, based on how much each participating hunger organization raises during that time, the Maine Credit Unions’ Campaign for Ending Hunger has been awarding incentive grants. “The $1,000,000 in incentive grants that have been distributed to Ending Hunger Week participants have enabled organizations throughout Maine to help hundreds of thousands of Maine people who otherwise would have gone hungry. Maine’s credit unions are committed to helping to end hunger in Maine and we are proud to be able to fully fund Ending Hunger Week. This Campaign represents the dedication that Maine’s credit unions have to helping their communities and the people they serve,” said Maine CUL Director of Communications Jon Paradise. In addition to providing 100% of the funding for Ending Hunger Week, the Maine Credit Unions’ Campaign for Ending Hunger also contributes thousands of dollars to many of the other 300+ hunger organizations in Maine. So far the Maine Credit Unions’ Campaign for Ending Hunger has raised over $1.32 million, including a record-setting $193,624 in 2002. One hundred percent of all funds raised stays in Maine and goes directly to help end hunger.
