Looking back six years ago finds a proposed state credit union charter act in Delaware facing an uphill battle. “We drafted the act because we’re very concerned with losing potential members. Why not have the option to convert?” said Duke Strosser, CEO of Delaware FCU. “We’re putting all our eggs in one basket with the AT&T case. But what if it doesn’t go our way, then what?” According to Delaware CU League President Bob Walls, the league was hesitant to back a major bill based on one CU’s perspective and it would not do so without educating its 47 other members. “The only way to get a feel from all our members is to first educate them on the issue, and then let them make a judgment,” said Walls. Also in that issue credit unions mobilized to counter a banker-brokered FOM assault. The two-day conference marked the official establishment of a wider campaign alliance -dubbed the Credit Union Coalition for Consumer Choice – willing to join the fray against banker attempts to dictate credit union membership policies.
