TEXARKANA, Texas – The $247 million Red River Federal Credit Union, headquartered in Texarkana, is taking a leading role in a fight to prevent a local army base from being closed, according to a media source in the Texarkana area. The base in question is the Red River Army Depot, whose employees have been RRFCU members since 1943, according to the Texarkana Gazette. The Depot is slated for closure in the next round of the Base Realignment and Closure process coming up next year. The credit union hosted a fundraising event to raise money to hire consultants and lobbyists for the effort and has made a special account available to raise funds to send representatives to Washington and undertake other efforts. Although RRFCU, noted CEO Robert Buck, has expanded to take in other local consumers in 1978; the tie with the defense complex is still strong. “That is still a very critical part that makes up our credit union,” Buck was quoted as saying.
