HIGHTSTOWN, N.J. – Call it a business decision that had good intentions but didn’t work out. Five years after the board of the once-called New Jersey Credit Union League unveiled the organization’s new identity as The Credit Union Affiliates of New Jersey, the organization’s board has gone back to calling itself the New Jersey Credit Union League. The League’s board of directors voted unanimously on June 7 to make the name change, effective immediately. Confusing? Not really, said Evan Childs, the League’s former director of public relations who was recently promoted to director of governmental affairs. “The legal name for the organization has always been New Jersey Credit Union League, it was never legally changed to `affiliates.’ All of our checks say `New Jersey Credit Union League,’ and even the steel signage on our brick headquarters still says `league.’ It was never changed,” said Childs. Childs said the organization intended to legally change its name to `affiliates.’ But he said, “The name Credit Union Affiliates of New Jersey never really stuck. Everyone, for example, called us asking for the league. Our state legislators even refer to us as the league. That’s what people know us as, so our decision to go back to calling ourselves the New Jersey Credit Union League was made to create less confusion,” he said. When the once-called New Jersey Credit Union League announced its name change in December 1998 to Credit Union Affiliates of New Jersey, it described the new name as “the new umbrella name for the network of groups that make up the New Jersey credit union support system.” The core entities included, a release read: the New Jersey Credit Union League, Professional Services Group (PSG), and Credit Union League Allied Services (CULAS), as well as other ventures including Credit Union Service Centers (CUSC), CU24, and CUNA Mutual Group.
