The Ellis Island Medal of Honor was created in 1986. Since that time some 1,300 people have received the award. The list of winners reads like a Who’s Who of business, entertainment, politics, and sports. Past winners include the following: Politics: Bill Clinton, George Bush, Jimmy Carter, Gerald Ford, Richard Nixon, Senator John Glenn, Senator John McCain, Attorney General Janet Reno, Rosa Parks. Arts & Entertainment: Frank Sinatra, Bob Hope, Andy Williams, Paul Simon, Gloria Estefan, Natalie Cole, Wayne Newton, Quincy Jones, Michael Douglas. Sports: Muhammad Ali, Yogi Berra, Joe DiMaggio, Mickey Mantle, Joe Torre, Arthur Ashe, Tommy Lasorda. Business: George Steinbrenner III, Lee Iacocca, Michael Eisner, Paul Tagliabue, Donald Trump. Media: Walter Cronkite, Barbara Walter, Kathie Lee Gifford, Phil Donahue. Military: General Norman Schwartzkopf, General Colin Powell, General George Joualwan.
