MADISON, Wis. – It wasn’t the fourth of July but it seemed that way at CUNA Mutual on May 13. Approximately 2,000 of the company’s employees paused to “Celebrate America.” The company’s campus was decked out with red, white and blue adornments, even much of the food was red, white and blue. There was a patriotic sing-along featuring the CUNA Mutual Choir and the Jefferson Middle School Band. The company also sold 1,200 American flag T-shirts, with $6,000 in proceeds going to the United Way Credit Union Youth Services Partnership. The event was in part an honor to CUNA Mutual President/CEO Mike Kitchen who this weekend will receive a 2003 Ellis Island Medal of Honor in New York City. The awards are presented annually by the National Ethnic Coalition of Organizations to recognize outstanding citizenship, individual achievement and encouragement of cultural unity. Kitchen has dual citizenship from Canada and the U.S. – he just became a U.S. citizen late last year. Past winners include many U.S. presidents, great athletes, and famous entertainers.
