Gateway Credit Union, Aurora, Colo., Board Vice Chairman Kenneth C. Melcher has been named the Volunteer of the Year by the Colorado Credit Union System. Melcher was selected for the award based on his community volunteerism on behalf of Gateway Credit Union, including his service with the Aurora Chamber of Commerce Ambassador Club, the Aurora Chamber of Commerce Defense Council, and the Colorado Credit Union League Volunteer Involvement Program. In addition to the Volunteer of the Year, Melcher was recently honored by the Aurora Chamber of Commerce as the 2002 Ambassador of the Year and Aurora’s Veteran Volunteer of the Year. John Deere Community Credit Union, Waterloo, Iowa, Executive Vice President Mike Harvey, has been awarded the 2003 Credit Union Professional Cooperative Spirit Award at the Iowa Credit Union Annual Convention. The award was created in 1992 to recognize individuals who have shown outstanding service, commitment, and leadership in the credit union movement. Member One Federal Credit Union, Roanoke, Va., Senior Vice President of Branch Administration Karen Lynch has been named the 2003 Virginia Credit Union Professional of the Year by the Virginia Credit Union League. Lynch actively supported legislation responsible for furthering credit union access by making credit union membership and benefits available to underserved areas in Virginia. In addition, she has been instrumental in the growth of Member One through management and support functions including the establishment of a full-service student-run branch in Franklin County High School. Keesler Federal Credit Union, Biloxi, Miss., has awarded several employees for their loyalty and years of service. Sixteen employees were awarded for five years of service. Congratulated for 10 years of service were Rhonda Beddingfield; Cheryl Papania, Corleen Tatum, Skip Portas and John Lynch. Also recognized were Mimi Moody for 15 years of service; Jill Nicholson for 20 years of service, and Tina Nail for 25 years of service. Hudson Valley Federal Credit Union, Poughkeepsie, N.Y., Investment Center Advisor Roy Corsell has been honored as Fidelity Advisor Funds council member. Telephone Credit Union, Cleveland, Ohio, has been awarded the Dora Maxwell Award for Social Responsibility. The credit union raised over $16,000 for a long-time member’s grandson with severe cerebral palsy. The six year old boy receives special treatments in Mielno, Poland using an “Adeli” suit (which cosmonauts use when they return from space) and intense therapy. Southeast Oakland Community Credit Union, Berkley, Mich., and Thompson-Phelan Inc., a commercial design/build firm, have been named the overall grand prize winners of Spectrum, an international competition to recognize creative excellence in ceramic tile design. The credit union was recognized for its unique flooring tile work at a branch that was once a strip mall grocery store.
