SAN ANGELO, Texas – The $115 million 1st Community Federal Credit Union has taken on helping a nearby community that has begun to experience a dire water crisis According to local media, the 895 residents of Miles, Texas, which is within 1st Community’s sixteen county field of membership, have been told they cannot wash their cars or water their lawns. The students in the school have to eat off of paper plates and use plastic cutlery. Conservation methods escalated last week when output from the Coleman Well – the largest source of water in Miles – diminished. The well is pumping 8,000 gallons of water every three hours, reported a city official. The well runs for an hour to pump the water and then is turned off for two hours while the well slowly recovers. 1st Community President Bill Nikolauk contacted the local Wal-Mart to verify availability of a pallet of water to deliver to Miles and the two businesses decided to partner to provide some much needed relief to a desperate town, the credit union said. 1st Community serves a 16 county field of membership that includes mostly underserved and low-income areas like Miles.
