Nazarene Credit Union, Brea, Calif., has donated five computers to the Los Angeles Grace Church of the Nazarene for its Woodcrest Christian School. The school is located in South Central Los Angeles. AmeriChoice Federal Credit Union, Mechanicsburg, Pa., has donated $1,200 to the Jake Gittlen Memorial Golf Tournament. The proceeds of this tournament, which are anticipated to exceed $760,000 for 2003, go directly to The Jake Gittlen Cancer Research Institute at Penn State Hershey Medical Center. Investigators at the Institute are working on many facets of cancer research, including carcinogenesis, immunotherapy, metastasis, genetic instability, and gene regulation. CEFCU, Peoria, Ill., has donated $15,000 toward the construction of a new Alzheimer/Dementia unit located at Lutheran Hillside Village. The contribution is part of the Lutheran Senior Ministries Foundation’s Faith, Hope, & Life campaign. The funds will help provide a place where adults afflicted with dementia can age and receive appropriate medical care to maximize their independence and quality of life. Ste. Croix Regional Federal Credit Union, Lewiston, Maine, has recently made a donation to the Greater Androscoggin Humane Society’s capital campaign for a new animal shelter. The funds will be used to sponsor a cat condo at the new shelter. Currently the shelter provides a safe haven for approximately 3,600 homeless and abandoned animals in the greater Androscoggin area per year. Southwest Airlines Federal Credit Union, Dallas, sent four of its staffers, Nanette Stracener, John Pryor, Sam Campos and Susette Hill to participate in the 31st Annual Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10-Mile Run benefiting Children’s Miracle Network. To increase local participation, five Texas credit unions formed the “Texas Challenge” to raise more money than credit unions from other states participating in the race. Texas Challenge CUs included American Airlines FCU, Fort Worth City CU, Southwest Corporate FCU, Southwest Financial FCU and Southwest Airlines FCU. The Texas Challenge raised $11,425.31.Heritage Credit Union, Madison, Wis., has announced that nine of its employees have received certification in CPR and Standard First Aid through the American Red Cross. HCU participants were taught how to provide assistance in real life emergencies through videos, lectures and hands-on practice of skills learned through the use of mannequins. Certified employees include Kristine Hrubes, receptionist; Tina Sandridge, member services; Connie Stupar, loan department; Jim Schmitz, credit committee; Cindy Tietz, visa coordinator; Lynn Niebuhr, compliance services; Nancy Schrimpf, branch manager and Darek Williams and Richard Borden in the IS department. Their certifications in CPR are valid for one year and three years in Standard First Aid. USA Federal Credit Union, San Diego, Calif. has helped raise $1,164,461 to benefit the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. Over 50 staffers participated in the 2003 MS Walk. USAFCU’s team members proudly carried the USAFCU flag and were briefly seen on a local “live” television newscast. MS is a chronic, unpredictable and disabling disease of the central nervous system with no known cure.
