Treichel Slides into Region I Top Spot as Bumgardner Retires After More Than 30 Years

ALEXANDRIA, Va.-The NCUA Board announced last week that Deputy Executive Director Mark Treichel has been selected to replace Region I Director Layne Bumgardner who retired April 3. As Region I Director, based in Albany, N.Y., Treichel will be responsible for managing the agency’s supervision and examination program for the states of Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, Rhode Island, and Vermont. Treichel has 12 years of management experience with NCUA. He has worked in three different regions and held two positions in central office in his more than 16 years with the agency. He was named deputy executive director in the central office in April 2000. Treichel holds an accounting degree from the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities in Minneapolis. “Mark Treichel has served in a number of vital capacities during his 16 years at NCUA and I have always been impressed with his skills and vision for this agency,” NCUA Chairman Dennis Dollar said. “Mark has earned my respect by demonstrating his commitment to safety and soundness, leadership in achieving operational efficiencies, and innovation in seeking to accomplish strategic goals and efficiently administer Board policies.” Treichel will continue to serve as deputy executive director until a replacement is chosen. Region I Associate Regional Director Programs Elizabeth Whitehead will serve as acting Region I Director until Treichel assumes the new post. Bumgardner retired after serving at NCUA since 1967. He began as an examiner in Toledo, Ohio and has worked in the Chicago regional office, the Washington headquarters as a supervisor, program analyst, and in executive management and became Region I director in November 1989.
