WASHINGTON-Neither wind nor snow nor threat of terrorism can keep running fanatics from their mission. Even with war raging in Iraq and the terror threat at `high,’ runners are not being deterred from the 2003 Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10 Mile Race in the nation’s capital. All 7,000 slots are filled, according to CUNA Vice President of Communications and Media Outreach Pat Keefe. Keefe explained that congressional staff is a key subgroup for a successful turnout. So far, more than 260 staffers have registered to run, which is nearing an all-time high, he said. CUNA and NAFCU were on Capitol Hill the week prior to the race handing out Cherry Blossom run long-sleeve T-shirts to promote the trek. Runners will be lacing up their sneaks bright and early on Sunday, April 6 for the 8 a.m. race. With the terror level at the second highest level of orange, Phil Stewart of Cherry Blossom Inc., who handles the logistics, said that no one has told him there will be extra security specifically for the race and he did not ask for any. However, as a precaution, he made contingency plans to move the race to suburban Poolesville, Md. on the remote chance that something happened in Washington, D.C. If the terror level rises to `red,’ the race permit could be revoked, Stewart said. [email protected]
