OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. -FAA Employees Credit Union Training Specialist Yankee Jesko wants teens to know that sharks can be found on land too. That tongue-in-cheek humor is part of the credit union’s new financial basics program for teens age 13-19 entitled How to Become a Financial Survivor in a World Full of Sharks. According to Jesko, that is a long name for a quick-paced, two-hour exploration of some of the more important parts of money management with a focus on the information young people are interested in. “Learning how to manage your money shouldn’t be boring,” said Jesko. “Something unexpected is always happening during these sessions and we try to put some humor into them and avoid the lecturing stuff.” In addition to covering topics like savings, checking accounts, borrowing and even investments, Jesko makes sure the sessions include generous doses of prizes, audience participation and free pizza. To further encourage interest, FAA ECU offers the “Survivor” programs on various dates and the Web site must constantly be checked to find details on upcoming sessions. “We want people to leave with real information that can make a real difference in their lives, right now,” said Jesko. “Our goal here is to share basic information with younger people throughout the community so they don’t fall victim to the biggest shark of all in the financial ocean – ignorance.”
