CEDAR KNOLLS, N.J. – One of the killer apps that seemed to fade quickly during the dot-com implosion may not be quite dead yet. The number of wireless Internet users worldwide should increase almost 300% by 2007, according to Probe Research analyst David Chamberlain. Demand for wireless services, including banking, has lagged expectations so far, but Chamberlain says he expects that to change. He says that among the largest carriers, Verizon Wireless and Vodafone are still aggressively pursuing data services. “Both have large subscriber bases but relatively low penetration rates,” Chamberlain says. “However, some carriers feel that demand for wireless services has continued to fall short of expectation and even plan to reduce the emphasis on wireless Internet because customers have not yet shown sufficient interest,” he says. The tide may be turning, however, especially overseas. Chamberlain says about half of that 300% growth will come from the Asia/Pacific Region, with China alone contributing about 25% of that.
