LANSING, Mich. – Congressman Mike Rogers (R-Michigan) and State Sen. Mike Bishop (R-Rochester Hills) were named by the Michigan Credit Union League as their 2002 federal and state “Legislators of the Year.” The award recognizes lawmakers for their significant contribution to the credit union movement. Bishop is a member of the House Financial Services Committee and has been a supporter of bankruptcy reform. The League said he “regularly makes himself available to meet with credit union officials.” Bishop sponsored a bill in the House requiring the Michigan Department of Education to develop and make available to schools one or more model youth financial education programs. The bill was passed and signed in to law last year. For his efforts, Bishop was the first lawmaker to receive the National Desjardins Youth Financial Education Award. In addition to Rogers and Bishop, John Van Fossen, legislative director for U.S. Rep. Pete Hoekstra (R-Michigan) and Kirk Hanna, chief of staff for state Sen. Jerry Van Woerkom (R-Muskegon) were honored by the League as the 2002 “Federal Staffer of the Year” and “State Staffer of the Year.” All four honorees will be formally recognized at the Michigan League’s 2003 Government Affairs Conference on March 19.
