Michigan Financial & Insurance Services Commissioner Leaves Position

LANSING, Mich. – Commissioner Frank Fitzgerald of the Michigan Office Financial and Insurance Services announced his plans to leave his position, effective the end of Feb. 21. OFIS had no comment on the reason for Fitzgerald’s sudden departure. Fitzgerald was appointed commissioner of insurance by former Gov. John Engler in January 1999. He assumed the role of Financial and Insurance Services Commissioner in April 2000 when the newly created agency merged the regulation of all the state’s financial services, including banks, credit unions, insurance, securities, and consumer lending. Fitzgerald continued in that position since January when Gov. Jennifer Granholm was sworn in as the state’s 47th governor. No successor to Fitzgerald has been named yet.
