Looking back six years ago finds Nancy Pierce facing a packed house of GAC attendees barely containing her glee. “Ladies and gentlemen we have some good news to report. The Supreme Court of the United States has agreed to hear the credit union case,” said Pierce. The jubilation was followed by caution as CUNA CEO Dan Mica later told the crowd that credit unions must not leave their destiny solely in the Court’s hands. “Do consumers have the right to choose where they can save their money and apply for a loan? We hope the Supreme Court will say `yes’ to that important public policy question,” said Mica. Also in that issue a survey conducted by Luntz, a republican pollster and Global Strategy Group, Inc. principal Alexander S. Jutkowitz, a democrat finds that Americans like credit unions. Even Americans who know nothing about credit unions like them say pollsters, and if more knew about them -they would join them. Of the 700 consumers surveyed 66% agree that credit unions exist to help people and that banks exist to maximize profits. “Perhaps the most significant challenge credit unions face is that they are not well known,” said Luntz.
