“Last year’s bill and the one that will be reintroduced this year contain a business provision for thrifts that sets their business lending cap at 20%. I think (House Financial Services Committee Chairman Mike Oxley (R-Ohio)) is sympathetic to the idea that differing levels is something that needs to be seriously considered.” -CUNA Vice President and Senior Legislative Counsel Gary Kohn on increasing the member business lending cap for credit unions in the Regulatory Relief bill. “The only place they haven’t done this is in the U.S. Visa and MasterCard in around 2005 are going to be offering incentives to merchants and issuers to move to chip-based technologies.” -CUNA Network Services President John Hobko on why CNS is pushing now for credit unions to start using smart card devices. “Unlike many former federal credit unions that said they converted to state charters because of restrictions with the federal credit union act, if state chartered credit unions convert to federal charters because of their state’s law that taxes them, then their conversion decision would be driven by public policy and not something within the credit union system.” -Doug Duerr, president/CEO, NASCUS commenting on the effect any state law to tax state-chartered credit unions could have on the dual chartering system.
