CUNA Aiming to Release Underserved Survey at GAC

WASHINGTON – CUNA hopes to release its nationwide survey of how credit unions are doing serving low-income members and communities at its 2003 Governmental Affairs Conference in Washington, according to CUNA’s Chief Economist Bill Hampel. “I met last week with the staff working on the project,” Hampel said, “and they have a few more charts to run, but we’re aiming to get it ready in time for the GAC.” CUNA’s Madison, Wis.- staff is tabulating the data. The association began the survey in September 2002 in the hope of providing a baseline against which future credit union efforts to serve low-income members and residents of underserved communities could be measured. When released it will be the first survey of its type conducted of credit unions nationwide. NCUA Board Member Deborah Matz is on record as being particularly interested in the survey results and Hampel said previously that a copy of the survey would be going to her, as well as to the other NCUA Board members and any members of Congress who might be interested. At the time the survey began Hampel said the association was not conducting it primarily for Matz.
