WASHINGTON-While CUNA has touted its Project Zip code as extremely successful since its release last summer, the group is not resting on its laurels. According to CUNA Vice President of Political Affairs Richard Gose, Project Zip code has already helped CUNA and the state leagues locate 20 million members from nearly 600 different credit unions and their congressional districts. In the interest of privacy, member lists from different credit unions are not compared to eliminate duplication, however, some undercounting may occur as well if one spouse is listed and not the other, CUNA Senior Vice President of Communications Mark Wolff explained. Gose said that lawmakers have been impressed with the program, but CUNA was looking for a practical business application. Project Zip code is now working with nine-digit zip codes rather than just five to not only enhance CUNA’s and especially the leagues’ ability to identify members in different federal and state political districts, but so it can also help credit unions decide where to place shared branches or ATMs through the more precise nine-digit zip code. Gose emphasized that member privacy will still be strictly protected. The Georgia Credit Union Affiliates is kicking off the pilot program shortly. A representative from the league was unavailable before press time. The American Association of Credit Union Leagues funded the update, which cost just under $30,000 according to AACUL Executive Director Susan Newton. “The investment reflects our ongoing partnership with CUNA in support of programs like Project Zipcode that enhance our political strength at the grassroots level,” Newton commented. “The upgrade provides leagues and credit unions with valuable information to expand business opportunities, and that in turn generates added enthusiasm for a product that’s of clear benefit on the political side. It’s terrific synergy.” [email protected]
