ALEXANDRIA, Va.-In a lateral move, NCUA Region II Director Tawana James was appointed to the position of deputy director for examination and insurance. Herb Yolles vacated the position earlier this year to become inspector general. In her new post, James will assist Examination & Insurance Director David Marquis in overseeing the agency's supervision and examination program, risk management, and data collection programs. "I've long considered E&I to be the heart of NCUA's supervision program and I look forward to the opportunity to once again be involved in developing and implementing supervision policy," James said. NCUA Public Affairs Specialist Cherie Umbel said the move is unrelated to the consolidation of the regional offices planned for 2004. NCUA Executive Director Len Skiles will temporarily fill the position until the board decides on a replacement, she explained. James has most recently served as a regional director for five years, but she has been with the agency since 1980. In 1981, she became an examiner and was promoted to problem case officer in 1987. James became a loss case officer in the Office of Examination and Insurance in 1988, but returned to Region II as director of supervision in 1990 and was appointed the associate regional director of operations in 1995. James was named NCUA deputy executive director in October 1996 and became the Region II Director in May 1998. James holds a bachelor's degree in accounting from Towson State University in Maryland. She has completed several higher education courses, including the Harvard University John F. Kennedy School of Government Program for Senior Managers in Government. -
