WASHINGTON-Popular Capitol Hill newspaper, Roll Call, published a profile on CUNA President and CEO Dan Mica focusing on his life after Congress. The full-page article, which appeared in the paper's Life After Congress feature, homed in on his five-terms as a Florida Democrat in the House from 1979-1989. During that time Mica served on the Foreign Affairs Committee. In addition, he was appointed to Secretary of State George Shultz' `Inman Commission' on terrorism, created after the bombing of the Marine barracks in Lebanon. Mica, who also served on the board for International Broadcasting overseeing Radio Free Europe, among other things, pointed out the importance of the U.S. explaining for itself what the country's values are and linked it to today's anti-American rhetoric in the Middle East. "I just point to people in all of the Soviet bloc countries that I met in those years with Radio Free Europe, who told me story after story of growing up behind the Iron Curtain but listening to Radio Free Europe on their radios and getting the information on what their government was [truly] all about, what our government was about and what they considered was an honest source of information," Mica was quoted as saying. In the article, Mica also listed the effort to pass H.R. 1151 as one of the highlights of his career in the credit union community. "Instead of the Supreme Court decision standing and us immediately having to drop from 70 million to 50 million [members] and ultimately going out of business, we now have grown from 70 million to 83 million members," Mica was quoted in the article. Roll Call is published bi-weekly, covering the Congress and other events and news in the nation's Capitol.
