ALEXANDRIA, Va.-Facing the closure of the Region IV office in the Midwest and pressure from credit unions and their trades for NCUA to slash its budget, agency employees are concerned about job security. Earlier this year, some NCUA employees contacted the National Treasury Employees Union for guidance on organizing a union. Activities are still in the preliminary stages and probably will remain there over the next few months while NTEU determines whether there is enough support to set a vote. Employees from the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency recently voted to organize, while the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp and the Office of Thrift Supervision already have unions. Which employees are eligible for membership is based on the level of the employee. By law, management officials cannot join a union, NTEU President Colleen Kelley explained. Confidential employees, such a senior official’s assistant, is murky. Mainly she said that “frontline employees”-technology specialists, accountants, support staff, and others-would be eligible to join the union. [email protected]
