WASHINGTON – Even dotCoop, a wholly-owned subsidiary of the National Cooperative Business Association that is registering CUs' .coop domain names, is doing some discounting this holiday season. dotCoop is offering credit unions one free .coop domain for each new name they buy at the regular price. This represents a $198 dollar savings for two-year registrations or a $495 savings for five-year registrations. The deal is designed to help smaller CUs get in on the .coop domain name grab, and to hopefully kickstart CUs thinking about.coop to make the move. Credit unions have been the fastest group to move to coop according to the NCBA. Some 1,100 CUs have purchased 1,700 .coop domain addresses. Many CUs are buying multiple names to cover more possibilities in the way their names can be used. Texas is leading the way with 15% of Texas CUs already moving to .coop, that's above the 10% national average. A spokesperson for NCBA said this two-for-one deal is not an indication that sales aren't strong, but NCBA wants the purchases to come quicker. Business has been steady, but NCBA is looking for more of a rush as the year closes out. Credit unions can register for their .coop domain name at www.domains .coop. There is no limit to the number of times CUs can use the offer, though they must register all names by Dec. 31.
