RANCHO CUCAMONGA, Calif. – For the past 37 years, David L. Chatfield’s world has revolved around credit unions. He began his credit union involvement in 1965 as a volunteer elected official of a small credit union in Colorado. Three years later, he joined the CUNA Mutual Insurance Group as a field representative. He went on to serve as service corporation general manager for the New York State Credit Union League, director of political action for CUNA, president of the Alaska Credit Union League and senior vice president of Alaska USA Federal Credit Union. In early 1988, he was appointed by President Ronald Reagan to the NCUA Board, and served under Presidents Reagan and Bush Sr. In late 1989, he became the first executive director of the Filene Research Institute. He joined the California Credit Union League as president and chief executive officer in March 1991. The title of president of the Nevada Credit Union League was added on January 1, 1996. In addition to his league responsibilities, Chatfield represents CUNA as an executive committee member and is secretary of the World Council of Credit Unions. He also serves as vice chairman of CUNA’s World Affairs Committee, as a member of the board of trustees of the Western CUNA Management School, as president of CU Association of the West and is on the board of O’Rourke Career Connections, LLC. He was the recipient of the 1997 Herb Wegner Memorial Award, presented annually by the National Credit Union Foundation. He was inducted into the CUES Hall of Fame in 1998.
