Looking back nine years ago finds a lively debate over the future of private deposit-insurance. Then NCUA Chairman Roger Jepsen warns that “It’s not a matter of whether the private system of deposit-insurance dies; it’s just a matter of when.” American Share Insurance President Dennis Adams takes a Survival-of-the-Fittest view and claims not only will ASI survive, but it will form the basis of the share insurance system of the future. “We are seeing a growing interest in our program,” said Adams. “What really disturbs me is that a political appointee administering a federal regulatory office, is out there making these types of comments about a private enterprise,” said Adams. Jepsen responded that conversions to federal insurance have been instigated by the states, not NCUA “NCUA has not brought this about; NCUA has responded,” said Jepsen. “I wish all the remaining private insurers well.” Also in that issue, credit union efforts to counter field of membership disputes in Nebraska run into banker resistance. Independent Bankers Association of Americas Executive Vice President Ken Guenther claims, “Credit unions are violating their common bond and are ambitious above and beyond serving their local communities.
