WINSTON SALEM, N.C. – Allegacy Federal Credit Union has gone back in time with its dedication of the R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company Community Room. A four-panel mural on canvas designed by local artist Joanie Brown entitled “A Reynolds Legacy” will grace one wall of the room located in Allegacy FCU headquarters. The mural-on-canvas highlights R.J. Reynolds’ 1874 ride into town on a statuesque horse and continues with landscape drawings of the towns of Winston and Salem. The work of art flows from one canvas to the next, depicting the progression of tobacco from the fields to the cured phase. The Little Red Factory, the first R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company factory, stands in one corner next to a succession of drawings including the Reynolds Building, which was the prototype for the Empire State Building in New York City. The final panel signifies what the company’s generosity has meant to the community through the depiction of a vast array of organizations that have benefited from RJ Reynolds. “This is truly an exceptional work of art,” said W.K. Keener, Jr., president and CEO of Allegacy FCU. “Since the R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company Community Room will be a gathering place for member organizations, this artwork is one way of recognizing the value we place on the company, its founder and the contributions the company has made to our community and will allow us to remember the legacy of the Reynolds family.” Allegacy began in 1967 as the Reynolds Carolina Federal Credit Union and changed its name in 2001 because the credit union has grown to more than 330 member companies.
