WASHINGTON-Numerous credit union representatives hailing from Virginia held a videoconference from all over the state and inside Credit Union House with their congressmen October 3 to discuss the bankruptcy reform legislation (H.R.333). It was the first such usage of credit unions’ home away from home on Capitol Hill. More than 80 Virginia credit union officials, gathered in Roanoke, Richmond and Norfolk, were on hand for the videoconference with Representatives Bob Goodlatte (R), Virgil H. Goode (I), and Frank Wolf (R), as well as an aide to Congressman Eric Cantor (R). While all the members of Congress participating supported the bankruptcy reform bill, none could give a timetable for a vote on H.R. 333. The call lasted 90 minutes. “This videoconference was a great use of this facility, not only in the equipment but in the vision” that we had in establishing Credit Union House, Virginia League President Rick Pillow commented. “And members of Congress recognized our vision and the potential for this use of the facility.” Pillow said he expects more leagues to participate in similar usage of Credit Union House in the future. Deb Thomas, director of Governmental Affairs for the Virginia league recommended gathering constituent support, confirming that members of Congress will be able to attend and embracing technology for a successful videoconference.
