LATHAM, N.Y. – The New York Credit Union Foundation has presented a $600,000 check to the New York Fire Safety Foundation to help in the city's 9/11 recovery efforts. The funds, which will help equip the Fire Department's Special Operation Command, are part of the $1.4 million raised from credit unions and their members. "This donation speaks volumes about the credit union movement's response following the terrorist attacks of September 11th, and about the credit union philosophy of `people helping people,'" said Bill Mellin, President/CEO of the New York State Credit Union League. "We are honored to support New York's brave firefighters' response to future emergencies as they protect the citizens of New York City." In addition, funds are still being distributed to families of victims who were credit union members and New York City's uniformed services. In the wake of the September 11th attack, the Fire Safety Foundation received and distributed $2.8 million to the families of 343 members of the department who perished in the rescue operation. "Thanks to the enormous generosity of the New York Credit Union Foundation and the New York Fire Safety Foundation, we will be able to further enhance the equipment and capabilities of the highly specialized emergency response units of Special Operations Command," said Fire Commissioner Nicolas Scoppetta.
