WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – Forty-eight state regulators are responsible for the regulation and supervision of 4,264 state-chartered credit unions in the U.S with more than $129,131.4 billion in assets. Though sometimes less visible on a day-to-day basis than their federal counterpart, the NCUA, to state-chartered credit unions-even those that are federally insured-these regulators are responsible for ensuring the safety and soundness of their state’s credit unions and the implementation of their credit union statute. (Note: Delaware, South Dakota and Wyoming do not have state charters).
