Affinity Federal Credit Union, Basking Ridge, N.J., has raised $29,000 to benefit the Northwest New Jersey Maternal & Child Health Network during the Fifth Annual Golf Invitational. This year’s event drew over 130 participants and sponsors. The mission of the Northwest New Jersey Maternal and Child Health Network is to improve access to quality, cost-effective health care for pregnant women, infants, children and adolescents in northwest New Jersey by coordinating community and hospital-based services. The network is committed to actively fostering improvements in the outcomes of pregnancy and in the health status of infants, children and adolescents and their mothers. First Tech Credit Union, Beaverton, Ore., along with CUNA Mutual, Credit Union Association of Oregon and Portland Teachers Credit Union has raised $225,000 during the Credit Unions for Kids-Hank & Moose Golf Open to benefit Doernbecher Children’s Hospital and the Children’s Miracle Network. Participating in the event were Major League Baseball players Hank Bauer and Bill “Moose” Skowron in addition to Roy Sievers, Cal McLish, Don Larsen, Ryne Duren, Jake Gibbs, Vern Law and Tom Tresh. Jeanne D’Arc Credit Union, Lowell, Mass., has awarded $500 to members Maeghan Berube and Krystal Lloyd as part of a membership drive contest. During the promotion, titled “Come Grow With Us,” members of the credit union were invited to refer a family member, friend, co-worker or acquaintance for membership. New members were required to open a Savings Account and obtain one other product or service in order to qualify for the drawing. Once the account opening process was completed, the referring member and new member were eligible to win $500 each. Charlotte Postal Credit Union, N.C., has helped make the first day of school a little brighter for everyone. CPCU staffers stuffed and delivered 450 goody bags for each student at Westerly Hills A+ Academy. Kindergarten through second graders received a pencil, sharpener, eraser and a box of crayons. While third through fifth graders received a pen, pencil, sharpener, eraser and a single subject notebook. Teachers each received tote bags full of school supplies, and certificates for unlimited photocopies at the credit union. In addition CPCU has donated 100 tape recorders to the Media Center and raised over $850 to benefit the school. Community America Credit Union, Kansas City, Mo., has “stuffed” a school bus with more than $25,000 worth of school supplies to benefit Kansas City area children. Community America CU held a charity drive over the summer in conjunction with local Oldies 95 radio station. Members were encouraged to donate money or drop off school supplies at the credit union’s branches More than 10,000 school supplies were collected and delivered to the City Union Mission. Municipal Employees Credit Union of Baltimore, Inc., Md., over 40 employees joined other Sandtown volunteers in rolling up their sleeves to help renovate more than 30 homes. Recently keys were handed to Sandtown Habitat homeowner Tisha Burrell and her family. Burrell’s house is just one of almost 200 that have been rehabilitated over the last 11 years. Maryland Senator Paul Sarbanes in partnership with MECU of Baltimore, the Fannie Mae Baltimore Partnership Office, and the Federal Home Loan Bank sponsored the reconstruction of Ms. Burrell’s house. Senator Sarbanes worked on this house as part of the “The Houses The Senate Built” program under which every Senator is sponsoring a Habitat house in their state. Senator Sarbanes sponsored two houses. MECU has been in partnership with Sandtown Habitat for the past five years. Pacific Service Credit Union, Walnut Creek, Calif., has donated $2,500 to Homeless Education Project for tutoring programs at the county’s five homeless shelters. Through the Contra Costa Family and Children’s Trust Fund, individual and group tutoring will be provided at each of the homeless sites on a weekly basis. The program is offered after school for older children, and in the morning for preschoolers. In addition to tutoring, parent training is provided at each homeless shelter to assist the parents in becoming more actively involved in their child’s learning, with a focus on new technology and assisting with homework. Maine Credit Union League, Westbrook, has presented more than 100 bears and other assorted stuffed animals to the Pediatric Unit at Eastern Maine Medical Center. The donation was made through the MCUL BearHugs For Kids program. Each year credit unions here collect bears of all shapes and sizes and donate them to law enforcement agencies, emergency personnel, hospital emergency rooms, and other organizations throughout the State. This year’s program collected a record-setting 1,300-plus bears.
