WASHINGTON-CUNA President and CEO Dan Mica told NCUA Chairman Dennis Dollar that the trade association is very interested in promoting the agency’s Access Across America program, organized for greater outreach for areas with inadequate financial services. The suggestion came in a letter to Dollar on the heels of his speech during the summer meeting of the American Association of Credit Union Leagues. “As I have stated, I believe this a visionary program that is fully consistent with the tradition of the credit union system to provide service to individuals from all segments of the economy, including low-income persons,” Mica wrote. CUNA’s CEO touted the initiative’s success thus far this year, noting the more than 9 million potential members in underserved areas added in the first six months of the year. He also observed that Access Across America has been well received by key government officials and by the credit union community. Mica offered to include Dollar in an upcoming conference call with CUNA’s Board, the league presidents, and others to emphasize the program; provide a summary of the program and links on CUNA’s Web site and in its publications; encourage credit unions involved to pass on information and successes; feature the initiative in Hike the Hill visits; and aid in other ways. “In closing, CUNA has recognized the significance of your Access Across America program since its development, and we look forward to supporting the initiative in an even greater capacity,” Mica concluded.
