Looking back four years ago finds credit union trade associations preparing for a floor fight over business lending cap amendments to H.R. 1151. At issue is the Hagel-Bennett amendment, which would reduce the current member business cap by 43%. “It’s an unreasonably restrictive amendment and we’re doing everything in our power to defeat it,” said CUNA Senior Legislative Counsel Gary Kohn. “None of it makes any sense . We’ve already been compromised to death, and this is `death by compromise’.” Also in that issue Federal Employees Credit Union struggles to find a way to honor the memories of those lost during the 1995 terrorist bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building. After consulting with Oklahoma City local landscaper Sonni Mercer, FECU has decided to design a Remembrance Garden behind its new headquarters. Described as “an interactive space intended to engender remembrance, peace and hope for all who visit” the garden will feature four different memorials – the Pool of Tears, Survivor’s Court, Volunteers Pavilion, and Visitor’s Corridor. “We want it to be a positive, peaceful place to remember those we loved,” said Amy Petty, an employee who was injured in the blast and is presently the chair of the Memorial Garden Committee.
