Credit unions frequently find themselves in debates over whether big is better. When it comes to credit union publications, there is no debate. Strictly from a reader perspective, big is better! The reasons why include the fact that only a consistently larger publication (more editorial pages) can cover a wider range and number of credit union stories. Only with sufficient space devoted to the editorial product can important stories be covered in the depth they deserve, including space to provide supporting graphs, charts, photos, and sidebars. Today’s credit union industry generates an unprecedented amount of news on a weekly basis. This important news involves thousands of newsworthy individuals and organizations. It cannot be covered with a line or two of copy, or worse, it cannot be completely ignored. When a credit union publication gets stingy with its editorial pages, for whatever reason (lack of advertising, too much emphasis on making a buck, inadequate staff, lack of news sources, etc.), too many really important stories are missed. The real loser is all those individuals who need to be informed on a thorough and timely basis to help them do their job. That’s a long way of saying how proud we are at Credit Union Times of being able to bring our readers this 120 page issue, the most comprehensive and timely news report on credit unions available anywhere during this week when NAFCU hosts its Annual Conference and Exhibition in Seattle.
