BROOKLYN, N.Y. – Engine Company 214/Ladder Company 111 in the Bedford-Stuyvesant area here recently accepted $30,000 from the Albany-based SEFCU Foundation for its World Trade Center Family Relief Fund. “In keeping with SEFCU’s long standing commitment to touching individuals’ lives through the Foundation, we carefully researched ways to directly impact families who had lost loved ones at the World Trade Center,” said SEFCU COO/ Foundation President Michael J. Castellana. “We wanted to ensure the donations of our members would truly make a difference on a one-to-one basis.” Five men from this firehouse lost their lives during rescue efforts on September 11. The WTC Family Relief Fund program created by the firefighters here not only provides funds to the families as needed but also support to all eight children who lost their fathers until they reach adulthood. This support includes everything from transportation to memorial services, to firefighters serving as surrogate fathers at the children’s school and athletic events. In addition, each month one firefighter is assigned specifically to the needs of the families. As part of the check presentation ceremony, SEFCU Foundation also provided a special bronze plaque in memory of the company’s firefighters who lost their lives and donated a piece of exercise equipment for the firehouse training room.
