MADISON, Wis. – CUNA Network Services has introduced SafeID, a USB device designed to give members secure access to their online data. “SafeID combines a smart card chip, Universal Serial Bus or USB connector and operating system software on a house key-sized device,” said John Hobko, President of CUNA Network Services. “This essentially allows a user to plug the smart electronic key fob directly into the standard USB port on a PC, eliminating the need for a card reader and power supply.” Hobko said that credit union members will be able to use secure authentication via SafeID to access their credit union’s Internet banking system, as well as store and manage personal data, including favorite URLs, passwords, addresses and accounts. Doug Benzine, SVP of Business Development, for CUNA Network Services, said that smart cards, which have yet to take off in America, can give CUs a competitive edge. “There will be nearly 60 million smart cards in use in the U.S. at the end of 2002. Estimates are that number will be 125 million by the end of 2004,” Benzine said. “The market for personal online financial services via smart cards is open. Credit unions can fill that void via SafeID.”
