BOISE, Idaho – The Idaho Department of Finance is making available a free brochure to help consumers avoid mortgage pitfalls. The brochure-"Mortgage Loans"- that's being published in conjunction with Idaho Financial Literacy Month, is an effort to educate first-time homebuyers and homeowners who may be thinking about getting a second mortgage or refinancing their current mortgage. The brochure offers tips, work sheets, and a glossary of mortgage terms. It's sponsored by the American Association of Residential Mortgage Regulators, the National Association of Consumer Credit Administrators, and the American Financial Services Association. Among the tips offered: Recognize that different types of loans exist for different situations. Comparison shop desired loan terms with different lenders and brokers. A consumer who doesn't shop around may wind up paying too much on any loan. Don't sign any form or contract until you read and understand its full meaning and any blank spaces have been filled in. Know your legal rights, and consult an attorney if you want to.
