MADISON, Wis. -Tax season is well underway, and the latest fraudulent e-mail scam is taking full advantage of it. The phony e-mail sent from a non-Internal Revenue Service source notifies the receiver that he/she is under audit and needs to complete a questionnaire within 48 hours to avoid the assessment of penalties and interest. The e-mail refers to an “e-audit” and references the IRS Form 1040. The taxpayer is asked for such personal information as social security numbers, bank account numbers and other confidential information. CUNA Mutual Group is alerting credit unions that the IRS does not conduct “e-audits,” nor does it notify taxpayers of a pending audit via e-mail. Credit unions are asked to inform members of this scam and advise them not to provide the requested information. Anyone receiving an e-mail of this nature is advised to immediately contact their local IRS office.
