ALEXANDRIA, Va.-NCUA Chairman Dennis Dollar complimented President George W. Bush’s push for volunteerism in his State of the Union speech last week. He also noted that credit unions present a great opportunity for volunteerism. “[A]s America’s spirit has been renewed and our values have strengthened in recent months, I especially commend the President for his initiative on volunteerism and his call for Americans to commit to two years of volunteer service over their lifetimes,” Dollar said. “America’s credit unions are an ideal place for some of this volunteerism to manifest itself.Volunteerism is at the center of the credit union heartbeat.” He noted that credit union volunteers serve Americans from all walks of life and assist in financial literacy efforts. “The need to help develop the next generation of leaders and volunteers for America’s credit unions remains a priority. NCUA will continue to explore opportunities to empower, encourage, and facilitate opportunities for volunteer service in America’s credit unions,” Dollar vowed. “We commend the President for his focus on volunteerism and know that it will be a benefit to credit unions.”
