<p>Langley Federal Credit Union, Hampton, Va., has donated hundreds of new toys to the Toys for Tots campaign. Each of the 12 LFCU branch locations served as depositories for the toys during the holiday season. Pacific Service Credit Union, Walnut Creek, Calif., has donated $5,000 to send more than 100 low-income children to see the Nutcracker ballet. Each year, the San Francisco Ballet and the Center Stage Ticket Foundation work together to send over 1,000 underprivileged local residents to the ballet. This is the first year PSCU joined the partnership. Washington State Employees Credit Union, Olympia, has raised $16,584 for United Way of Thurston County. The money includes pledges, donations, and money raised from events. This year, interest in the campaign was sparked by three women employees who agreed to have their head shaved, for pre-determined amounts. Chief Operating Officer Linda Hollen was spared the razor -her hair went for $20,000, as well as manager D’ Lou Stewart whose hair went for $17,000. In addition, VISA department employee Laura Lawrence received a thumbs up from fellow employees for putting her hair on the line for charity. Fund raising efforts also included a dunk tank, which raised $311. Northwest Chapter of Credit Unions of North Carolina, Winston-Salem, has built a Habitat for Humanity house for the Givens family. Area credit unions including Truliant Federal Credit Union, Winston-Salem City Employee’s Credit Union and Piedmont Aviation Credit Union raised more than $40,000 and donated countless volunteer hours to make the Givens family dream a reality. Community America Credit Union, Kansas City, Mo., has sponsored the 14th annual Red Ribbon Balloon Launch at Black Bob Elementary School. Students released over 600 red balloons to demonstrate their commitment to a drug free lifestyle. The event honors Drug Enforcement Administration undercover agent Enrique Camarena, who was killed by drug traffickers in Mexico in 1985. Each balloon was tagged with the school’s name and address and people who found the balloons were urged to contact Black Bob Elementary School to tell the story of how far the balloon has traveled. School officials have reported letters from as far away as Kentucky and North Carolina. EasCorp, Woburn, Mass., has announced that the Credit Unions of Massachusetts Kids at Heart Team has raised $220,000 for the Children’s Hospital Boston. The award, made on behalf of the credit union community, was one of the largest corporate donations received during the hospital telethon event. Over the past six years, Credit Unions of Massachusetts have donated more than $646,000 to the Children’s Hospital of Boston. Presenting the $220,000 check to Children’s Hospital Boston were: Donna Russo, vice president human resources, Digital Federal Credit Union; Leonard Broderick, president, Tremont Credit Union; David Sprague, president/CEO, Hanscom Federal Credit Union; and Alan Bernstein, Senior Vice President, EasCorp. This year participants include: Bridgewater CU; Digital FCU; EasCorp; Framingham Municipal FCU; Hanscom FCU; Hingham FCU; Jeanne D’Arc CU; Methuen Municipal Employees FCU; MIT FCU; Northeastern University FCU; Northern MA Telephone Workers CU; Quincy Municipal CU; Reading MA Town Employees FCU; Revere Municipal Employees FCU; Rockland FCU; RTN FCU; St. Anne’s CU of Fall River; St. Joseph CU; Stoneham Municipal Employees FCU; Telephone Workers CU; Tewksbury Municipal Employees FCU; TI FCU; Tremont CU; Wellesley Municipal Employees FCU; Woburn Municipal FCU. Community Federal Credit Union, Plymouth, Mich., has joined more than 2.6 million volunteers nationwide in the 11th Annual Make a Difference Day. Sponsored by USA WEEKEND magazine and the Points of Light Foundation, it is the country’s largest day of volunteering. Community FCU staff participated through a variety of projects at local offices and in the communities where their members live and work. Their efforts were part of more than 362 projects organized throughout Michigan. Given the opportunity to wear jeans to work, staffers contributed $800 to the Make A Difference Day Scholarship Fund to help families of the Sept. 11 tragedy. The credit union matched employee contributions for a total donation of $1,600. In addition, the Plymouth branch staff helped nearly 65 senior citizens get ready for winter by raking leaves, trimming bushes, changing light bulbs and replacing smoke detector batteries. Chartway Federal Credit Union, Virginia Beach, Va., has raised $46,500 for the Make-A-Wish Foundationr of Eastern Virginia. Over 100 golfers, representing Chartway’s Select Employee Groups and business partners, came together to participate in the Third Annual Charity Golf Tournament at Riverfront Golf Course in Suffolk, Virginia. The Make-A-Wish Foundation grants the wishes of children between the ages of 2 and 18 who have terminal or life threatening illnesses.The proceeds will benefit seven local area Hampton Roads children in the Make-A-Wish Program: Alli, who wishes to go to Atlantis Resort in the Bahamas; Phylicia, who wishes to visit Euro Disney; Deanna, who wishes to go on a cruise in the Bahamas; Brianna, Trevor and Amber, who all wish for a trip to Disney World; and Taylor, whose wish was undecided.</p>
