CUNA gets to "Know Fraud"

WASHINGTON-CUNA has become a part of the Treasury Department’s “Know Fraud” program, established to alert consumers to the problem of identity theft and give victims a place to report such cases. Treasury requested that CUNA work with credit unions to inform their members of ways to avoid becoming a victim of identity theft. Identity theft is suspected to have played a key role in the terrorists’ attacks of September 11, according to CUNA. “It’s a win-win situation all around,” CUNA Senior Vice President of Governmental Affairs John McKechnie said. The letter noted CUNA’s meeting with Treasury Assistant Secretary for Financial Institutions Sheila Bair, who also received a copy of the letter, in which they discussed how CUNA could help get credit unions interested in the program. CUNA plans to include a letter about the program in its nationally circulated newsletter.
