WASHINGTON-Prior to attacks, credit union lobbyists were very optimistic for the future of the bankruptcy reform legislation, but now nonessential items before Congress have been pushed into the background. According to recent reports from CUNA’s lobbying team, Congress will probably adjourn mid-October, following the passage of legislation related to the war on terrorism and appropriations bills. “We do not anticipate seeing bankruptcy reform in this session,” CUNA Vice President and Senior Legislative Counsel Gary Kohn said. On the good news front, the president signed the airline relief bill package (H.R. 2926). Both CUNA and NAFCU had written letters supporting the initiative. More than one million people are members of airline-sponsored credit unions, but there is no way to know how many of them are laid off airline employees.
