ALEXANDRIA, Va.-Under the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act, NCUA was required to provide guidance to credit unions regarding the unauthorized disclosure of financial information. To that end, NCUA has developed its Guidance on Identity Theft and Pretext Calling to protect credit union members from these types of fraud. The guidance summarizes pertinent laws; discusses what credit unions can do to protect member information; informs credit unions of how to report suspected criminal activity; emphasizes the importance of consumer education in prevention of these types of fraud; and provides references for additional assistance and previous NCUA publications. NCUA's member pamphlet, How to Avoid Becoming a Victim of Identity Theft, is available on its Web site.
