ALEXANDRIA, Va.-In a letter to credit unions (01-FCU-06), NCUA said that an FDIC-sponsored financial education program, called `Money Smart’ is a good guide for credit unions to offer their members. Though the program is not credit union specific, because there are not copyright restrictions, it may be adapted to better suit credit unions and their members. Money Smart was designed to help adults outside the financial mainstream to gain knowledge and start positive relationships with financial institutions. The program is free and includes 10 training modules on basic financial education topics including the use of savings and credit services and budgeting. Instructional materials are provided, as well as a take-home guide for participants. A brochure on the program is available at the FDIC’s Web site (www.fdic.gov/news/ publications/moneysmart/index.html.
