ALEXANDRIA, Va.-In preparation for her departure from the NCUA Board, Board Member Yolanda Wheat has traded in her home in McLean, Va. for a condominium in nearby Crystal City. Wheat has maintained two homes, one in Missouri for the past 11 years and one in the Washington-area, since her husband, Alan, was in Congress and while she was on the NCUA Board. “Every board members realizes the end of their term and starts to make arrangements for the future,” Wheat said. She added that she has changed locations in Virginia depending on which area her family was spending more time in. She noted that this was not unusual for NCUA Board members because they are limited to one six-year term at the agency. Wheat added that she has not heard anything from the White House as to her status at NCUA. Wheat declined to discuss her professional future until a later date. “I remain focused on making sure credit union business is smooth and running as efficiently as always,” she said. While this was the first time Wheat has had to join the monthly board meeting by teleconference, she said that it presented no undue hardship for her. She noted that she almost always travels with her books and notes on whatever the agency is working on so she felt prepared. Wheat also pointed out that NCUA Board members often travel and are able to keep on top of important issues from abroad, such as the effects on credit unions in light of last week’s attacks in New York City and Arlington, Va. She added that it was a miracle that no reports of injuries came from the credit union employees in the areas affected by the attacks and that they were not so lucky during the Oklahoma City terrorist bombing.
