LEEDS, U.K. – Sue Davenport, chief executive of Leeds City Credit Union has received the United Kingdom's Co-operative Council's Grassroots Co-Operators Award. She is only the second recipient ever of the award. Davenport was nominated for the award by the Yorkshire Chapter of Credit Unions, which praised her "seemingly inexhaustible knowledge of credit unions and her willingness to share her experience, knowledge and mistakes." Like many credit union leaders, Davenport started as a volunteer, then became Leeds City's first staff person. There are now 17 people working for the credit union which has just expanded its common bond to include everyone living and working in Leeds. Davenport is a graduate of CUNA's Development Education Program – one of only eight Britons to graduate from the American program. – [email protected]
