I agree wholeheartedly with Mike Welch’s July 25th publisher’s column regarding the lack of real issues discussed at today’s credit union meetings. But he missed an opportunity when he listed the important issues he would like to see discussed and debated. Where does credit union philosophy fit in? One of the major ills of the movement is that CU CEOs and board members don’t know what the credit union operating principles are. The issues concerning taxation would be moot if large credit unions would do more meaningful socially responsible programs like assisting low-income persons, or financing low-income housing. In my opinion, all major credit union conferences need to highlight social responsibility. One other issue that concerns me greatly is the fact that credit unions are back to business as usual after HR 1151. I think the majority of the population have forgotten what credit unions are all about and can care less. I believe this is very unfortunate.
